Lost/Found Pets and Pets available for immediate adoption

Pet Finder

The Elko Animal Shelter encourages the adoption of shelter animals by responsible persons. You are invited to visit the Animal Shelter to select a pet from the variety of animals normally available for adoption. Most animals that are housed at the shelter are abandoned or have been surrendered to the shelter for a variety of reasons.

The reasons vary but most of the time it is due to expectations of the owner and not the animal itself. Cute puppies can grow up to be big dogs. Small kittens grow up to be big cats. Inadequate space for the animal is another reason why owners surrender them to the shelter. If you live in an apartment or a dwelling without a yard, please consider a small inside pet that does not require room to run and can play indoors. If you rent, please check with your landlord or rental agreement prior to adopting a pet.

Adoption Information:
If you are considering getting a pet for your home, ask yourself these simple questions.

  • Where is the animal going to live?
  • Do you have adequate room and shelter for your pet?
  • Who is responsible to feed and water the pet?
  • Are you financially capable of maintaining a pet (including vaccinations, spay/neutered fees and unexpected illnesses)?
  • Why do I want a pet?

The City of Elko has a serious pet over-population (more animals than people) problem that results in the euthanasia (humane destruction) of many unwanted but otherwise healthy dogs and cats each day. Spaying or neutering animals before they have puppies or kittens is an effective method of controlling animal population. Your veterinairan can perform this simple medical procedure which promotes animal health and prevents the birth of additional animals for which good homes may not be available.

SPAY OR NEUTER ANIMALS BEFORE THEY HAVE PUPPIES OR KITTENS. IT IS HEALTHEIR FOR YOUR PET, LESS COSTLY FOR YOU AND YOU ARE HELPING TO CONTROL PET OVER-POPULATION.
