Voter Registration

 
 

* Tuesday, May 15, 2007: The last day to register or update your registration for the June 5, 2007 General Election.

The Elko City Clerk's office will be open May 7th to May 15, 2007 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for voter registrations. Our office is located at 1751 College Avenue, Elko, Nevada.


 
    KEEP YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION CURRENT  
   
  • Re-register to vote if you change your address or change your name by any legal means.
 
  Qualifications for Registering to Vote
You must meet the following qualifications in order to register to vote:
 
     
 
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be at least 18 years of age by election day. You may register if you are 17 years old and will be 18 by the day of the next election.
  • Be a Elko County resident for 30 consecutive days and a resident of your precinct for 10 consecutive days before election day.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or other loss of civil rights which would make it unlawful to vote. Exception: Convicted felons who have had their legal rights restored by a court of law are eligible to register to vote.
  • Not legally declared insane.
 
    Additional Registration Requirements for Military Personnel and Overseas Residents  
   
  • In addition to the qualifications listed above, military personnel and their dependents temporarily living outside of Nevada, and Elko County residents temporarily living overseas, must not be registered to vote in another state if they wish to register to vote in Nevada

 
  Registering to Vote - Required Information

If you meet the registration qualifications, you may submit a Voter Registration Application to the Elko County Election Department. Your application cannot be processed and you will not be registered as a Nevada voter until you furnish all the following required information:

 
     
 
  • NameElko County residential address: Do not list a post office box, do not list your business address unless you actually live there.Date of BirthIdentification number, such as a Social Security number, Nevada driver's license number, Nevada I.D. card number. (if you do not have or do not wish to give one of the above identification numbers, call the Election Department at (775) 753-4600 for instructions.)Party Affiliation

  Where to Register to Vote

   
  In Person: You may register in person before a Field Registrar, who is a volunteer trained to register qualified residents on behalft of the Registrar of Voters, or at one of the following locations:  
 
  • Any City Clerk's Office
  • The Elko County Election Department
  • The Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Before a Field Registrar (Field Registrars are volunteers trained to register qualified residents on behalf of the Registrar of Voters)
 
   

Official identification as proof of residence and identity, e.g., a Nevada driver's license or Nevada ID card is required when you register in person and wish to have the option of voting by mail in your first election.

  • Elko Main Post Office- 275 3rd Street
  • Elko County Library- 720 Court Street
  • Nevada State Welfare Office- 850 Elm Street
  • Carlin Justice Court- 101 S 8th Street
  • Tecoma Justice Court- Montello, NV
  • Wells City Clerk's Office-1510 Lake Avenue
  • Wells Justice Court- 1279 Clover Avenue
  • West Wendover City Office- 801 Alpine Street

If you register to vote by mail, Nevada law requires that you vote in person for your first election. Note: General municipal elections are non-partisan. You can vote for all offices on your ballot, regardless of your party affiliation.

 

 
  Keeping Your Voter Registration Current
When you move, notify the Elko County Election Department. This notification can be in the form of:
 
         
 
  • A letter providing your change of address.A Voter Registration Card with the address section property completed.The Election Department's Change of Address Card.
  • A properly completed Voter Registration Application.
 
  Change of Name by Marriage or Any Other Legal Means:
Complete a new Voter Registration Application showing your new name.
 
         
  Change of Political Party Affiliation Listed in Your Registration Record:
Complete a new Voter Registration Application showing your new party affiliation.
 
         
 
All notifications must have your handwritten signature.  
         
    Note:
Municipal Elections and Party Affiliation
You may vote for all offices and applicable ballot questions on your ballot, regardless of your party affiliation.
 
       
  Where Military Personnel and Overseas Residents May Register:  
     
 

Military personnel and their dependents temporarily living outside of Nevada, and Elko County residents temporarily living overseas, should obtain a "Registration and Absentee Ballot Request - Federal Post Card Application" (FPCA) from Voting Officers at military bases and U.S. Embassies or consulates. The FPCA is also available from the Elko County Election Department.
