The ravishing wildland fires throughout the State and specifically Elko County the past few summers have demonstrated to us all that Elko County can be vulnerable to disasters, including drought, epidemic, floods, hazardous material events, severe winter storms, and wildland fires. The risks posed by these hazards increases as the County’s population continues to grow.
The County of Elko, Nevada has launched a planning effort, known as the Elko County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, to assess risks posed by natural and manmade disasters and identify ways to reduce those risks. This planning process includes the unincorporated area of Elko County as well as each of the four incorporated cities of Carlin, Elko, Wells, and West Wendover. This plan is required under the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 as a pre-requisite for receiving certain forms of Federal disaster assistance.
The draft plan is now available for public comment through October 31, 2007. Each jurisdiction will submit the draft plan to their Council/Commission for adoption during early fall months and the County plans to submit the final version of this plan to FEMA in November 2007.
Public comments and participation is welcomed. For additional information, request to participate, or to submit comments, please contact the appropriate jurisdictional lead for this project:
